Panel: Culture – between economy, identity and critical citizenship
Saturday, 14.11.09, 15:00 – 16:30
The discourse of cultural production autonomy that has provided legitimation for culture to act as an exception has been fading away gradually. The societal positioning of culture is increasingly dominated by the identity related discourses of diversity, multiculturalism and nationalism, by the economic discourses of industries and propertization, and by the social discourses of community art and participation. And yet, culture continues to create exceptions to the emerging political, economic and social order. The panel will reflect on that rift between the growing alignment of culture and the insistent exception of culture, and offer thoughts on how cultural policies need to be reformulated in order to address that rift.
Moderator: Petar Milat (Multimedia Institute / Zagreb)
Speakers: Maja Breznik (Faculty of Arts and Peace Institute, researcher / Ljubljana), Mark Terkessidis (Institute for Studies in Visual Culture / Cologne), Pascal Brunet (Relais Culture Europe, director / Paris), Tomislav Medak (Multimedia Institute / Zagreb)
