Panel: Prefixes of culture
Friday, 13.11.09, 17:00 – 19:30
As if talking about culture immediately requires culture to be prefixed – qualified and quantified. And, moreover, culture seems exactly to be the work of translation among its different prefixes. Culture defined as interplay of adjectives, not of substantives. A particularly interesting case, for example, would be the replacement of the post- with the trans- that has shaped much of the cultural discourse in recent times. Historical orientation (like post-modernism or post-socialism) transformed into a spatio-geographical one (like trans-versatility or trans-culturality) where culture is less about its ends and more about its limits and borders. This panel will deal with the rhetoric of culture, its effectiveness and relevance for the broader social imagery.
Moderator: Leonardo Kovačević (Zagreb)
Speakers: Stephen Zepke (independent researcher / Vienna), Ugo Vlaisavljević (philosopher / essayist, Sarajevo), Rastko Močnik (Faculty of Arts, Professor / Ljubljana)
